Background and Focus: Precision medicine is an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle. By better utilizing electronic health record data, new diagnostic tools, and new medications, precision medicine is making an immediate difference in the lives of millions. We will look at advances in research, technology, and better public health policies that are allowing researchers, providers, and patients to develop truly individualized medicine.
Objectives: We will explain what precision medicine is and what its goals entail. We will look at why the time for this initiative is now and at the diverse projects, from almost every sector of health care, that fall under this broad heading. We will explore the barriers to adoption of precision medicine and look at how it will fit into the emerging value-based reimbursement model. We will look at how precision medicine can develop more effective ways to prolong health and treat disease.
